New Farm Cinemas: April 11 & 12. Tower Cinemas 19 April. 500 Days In The Wild follows the epic 6-year journey of filmmaker Dianne Whelan as she sets out to reconnect with nature and become the first person to travel the world’s longest trail. The 24,000 km Trans Canada Trail stretches across the continent of North America, connecting the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific oceans. It is the longest trail in the world. For six years filmmaker Dianne Whelan traveled the entirety of the land and water trails, the only person to ever accomplish this journey. 500 Days in the Wild recounts Dianne’s journey by bike, canoe, skis, snowshoes and on foot and her cross-cultural visits with those who live close to the land. This feature doc culled from 800 hours of footage is an intricate weave of adventure film, personal reflection and stunning captures of wildlife and landscapes. Using humour, adventure, beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack (including songs from Joni Mitchell, First Aid Kit, Xavier Rudd, and The Tragically Hip), 500 Days in the Wild will entertain audiences and inspire hope for the future. She started out alone, disillusioned with state of the world, to look for different ways of caring for the land and for each other. She ended the journey a bit wiser, more hopeful, in love and with a passion to share this story.

Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival and freshly nominated for four Golden Globes, IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT marks a powerful return from master filmmaker Jafar Panahi with a searing moral thriller that blends gripping suspense and dark humour with piercing political inquiry. The film follows Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri), an unassuming mechanic who has a chance encounter with Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi), a man he strongly suspects to be his former sadistic jailhouse captor. Haunted by uncertainty and fear of being mistaken, Vahid enlists several former political prisoners, each bearing their own scars from the same captor, to try and confirm Eghbal's identity. As the bickering group drives around Tehran with the captive, they must confront how far to take matters into their own hands with their presumed tormentor. What begins as a quest for truth becomes a harrowing and savagely comedic confrontation with conscience, forcing the group to reckon with the cost of vengeance and the possibility of mercy. With complex ideas about the fragility of facts and the weight of moral choice, Panahi turns his personal dissonance into a profound and galvanizing work of art.

The film first screened on February 25th, 1972 at the Manly Silver Screen Theatre in Sydney, Australia and much to everyone’s surprise became an instant hit at the box office with sold-out shows for months to come. The story was inspiring, visuals stunning, and the editing cutting edge; but, a big contribution to the film’s success was G. Wayne Thomas’ legendary soundtrack (released under Warner Brothers), which became the first Australian soundtrack to sell over a million copies and go Gold. The film’s counter-culture approach and its country-soul soundtrack resonated deeply with Australia’s youth culture and solidified it into Australian history as a national treasure. Above all, Morning of the Earth was a labor of love for Falzon: “I just wanted to make a beautiful film about surfing, the planet and the ocean.” Falzon frequented the beautiful North Coast of New South Wales with his friends as a getaway from the hustle and bustle of Sydney’s concrete jungle. He would pack his car with camera gear, surfboards and rolls of 16mm film and road trip north to capture the beauty and serenity that those journeys and destinations had to offer. But the film’s locations reached much farther than Australia’s North Coast. Morning of the Earth was the first film to capture surfing in Bali, and its two surfers, Stephen Cooney and Rusty Miller, became the first to ever surf the now world-famous point break, Uluwatu. Falzon also captured the powerful surf of Hawaii’s north shore during the winter of 1970/71, which contributes a presence of energy to the film that is unparalleled in both beauty and power.

Outré diva Divine is iconic as the wanted criminal hiding out with her family of degenerates in a trailer outside Baltimore while reveling in her tabloid notoriety as the “Filthiest Person Alive.” When a pair of sociopaths (Mink Stole and David Lochary) with a habit of kidnapping women in order to impregnate them attempt to challenge her title, Divine resolves to show them and the world the true meaning of the word “filth.” Incest, cannibalism, shrimping, and film history’s most legendary gross-out ending - Waters and his merry band of Dreamlanders leave no taboo unsmashed in this gleefully subversive ode to outsiderhood, in which camp spectacle and pitch-black satire are wielded in an all-out assault on respectability.

Not because streaming algorithms define what types of films get made Not because humanity’s attention spans require the plot to be repeated every 5 minutes These films get made because a story inside us is yearning to be told.
